In an effort to maintain safety measures and ensure physical distancing, we have been visiting our artists in their studios virtually. Double Insight is a new upcoming series which offers a glimpse into the artist studio and workplace; the sacred place where creative life and creative process coexist. ⁣

Double Insight
w/ Marigold Santos

Marigold Santos was born in the Philippines and immigrated to Canada in the late 1980’s. This Filipinx-Canadian artist is currently based in Calgary, with a multipurpose studio housed in a historic building in the heart of the city. Marigold’s practice is diverse and ranges from drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, ceramics and tattoo. As an inter-disciplinary artist, she requires a studio as versatile as her practice.

Her multifaceted art practice examines lived experience and storytelling, presented within the otherworldly. Her work explores self-hood and identity that embraces multiplicity, fragmentation and empowerment, as informed by experiences of movement and migration. These duality’s of attachment and separation, being grounded or uprooted, through fragmented characters is a recurring theme throughout all of Marigold’s practice.

Special to Santos studio practice and oeuvre, are tattoos.  Sometime into Marigolds’s career, she began taking those rich inky drawings she was so well known for, and in turn put them to flesh.  This part of her larger practice is equally celebrated as her paintings and was highlighted last year, within SURFACE TETHER, a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton.
