/ Rhythm Section
May 7 – June 27
Rhythm Section, a new exhibition of paintings by Calgary artist Mark Dicey explores the artist’s continued interest in abstraction and rhythms of everyday life. Having begun his dedicated studio and painting practice after graduating from the Alberta College of Art and Design, Dicey has established himself as an integral presence in the Calgary art world.
Mark’s work is strongly rooted in abstraction while also being directed by what Dicey refers to as “ritualistic actions of the studio,” activities that are a part of the artist’s daily life. It is in these moments that Dicey finds rhythm, a constant in all our lives and one that plays a central role in his artistic process.
“The work selected for Rhythm Section was created over an intensive six month period, the end of which corresponded with the arrival and devastation of Covid-19. In the exhibition, the viewer is presented with a new and thrilling body of work but also a renewed place from which to look at the world, one populated by the real and imagined representations of life that Dicey brings forward. Creating from his one car garage turned studio space, Dicey has taken up the role of the flâneur – observing, visually digesting and creating an understanding from his own unique vocabulary. For amongst the large washes of warm yellows, the shocks of greens, blues, pinks and the curving lines, the viewer will discover that the painter is a poet: his words brushstrokes, his line breaks blocks of colour. Dicey as the poet of painting offers a place for reading our present from his rhythmic and colourful perspective.”
“The everyday world is absorbed and brought into the making and thinking process: colours, shapes, textures and structural relationships. For Dicey, the work he makes and the creative process itself are states of flux and relational conversation.
The reactionary relationship that takes place in the painting process are twofold:
- the day to day observances (memory) are filtered, reconfigured and applied (consciously/ unconsciously)
- the interaction with what is taking place with the medium, assessing and pursuing what is evolving – observing, guiding, controlling, manipulating, questioning, confirming.”

Due to the restrictions of COVID-19, we’ve designed an Online Viewing Room for you to experience this exhibition. Using this platform, we can continue with our planned exhibition schedule here at the gallery while ensuring that the health and safety of our artists, contractors and clients, is a priority.
While the experience of viewing art in person cannot be replicated digitally, we hope that you feel connected to our physical space here at JHG as you check out Mark Dicey’s exhibition online.
Despite the current restrictions in place, soon we hope to be able to schedule private viewings at the gallery. These appointments will be timed with social distancing and sanitization precautions put in place to protect the clients and staff. We will also be limiting how many guests can attend the private viewings. To book, email: firstname.lastname@example.org
While things are changing daily in terms of COVID-19 related restrictions and plans for re-opening in Calgary, going forward you can expect our exhibition calendar to continue online with longer exhibition dates for each of our artists.
